Trending: Sacred vs. Secular
08-10-2016 - by Albert/Adel

Today, we are living in an “instant” world. So what becomes trend in this era is becoming “instant” in everything. Nowadays people tend to seek everything in instant to pursue time eficiency and complications in achieving their goals. However, there is always positive and negative sides in everything, including this “instant” trend. In one side, this trend brings some advantages such as time reduction, ease, comfort, etc. But in the other side these advantages can also lead people to disadvantages such as moral negligence and becoming secular. What should we do as Christians? Should we avoid the world we are living now? Or should we accept this world as the way it is?

In John Chapter 17:14-19 Jesus prayed: “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through your truth: Your word is truth. As you have sent me to the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for the sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”

From these verses, we know that as the children of God are not from this world. However, Jesus did not ask His Father to protect or take out us from the world we are living right now. He just asked His Father to protect or keep us from the evil. What does it mean to us? It means that we as  inhabitants of this world may accept all trends that this world has offered to us until now. However, we as the children of God are demanded to be able to filterize what is good and what is bad for us and all people around the world so that we can be the salt and the light of the world that can lead astray people to God.

However, living in this world is like a man who is diving into the sea. The man is not a sea creature, so he cannot live in the sea for a long time. He needs oxygen from the air that only exists above the sea. So when he is diving inside the sea, he will need some special utensils like scuba tank and special suit for divers in order to survive in the sea. Even so, these utensils cannot be used for a long time. In this world there are many trends that are unsyncronized with God’s teachings through the Holy Bible. Therefore, we as the children of God need to protect yourselves at all times. As in Ephesians 6:13 says that we have to use the whole armor of God, that we may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. There are three main ways for us as the children of God to remain standing in this tempted and wicked world:

1. Being planted in the House of the Lord

Nowadays many Christian communities are growing and nourishing everywhere. We can freely choose which community we want to be involved in. However, there are a main requirement that every Christian community must fulfil. As in Psalm 92:13-15 says: “Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To show that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” From the verses we can conclude that the right community in God’s eyes is the community that can help and lead you to become an overflowing person. We know that fruit is the result of overflowing food and nutritions received by a plant. After we are suitable in a certain community, try to stay in that community. Try to have a stong commitment in that community. Do not try to jump from one community to other communities so that you will not feel confused of the teachings you have received. In that way, we can be overflowing people by the God’s love, we can easily produce the fruits of the Holy Spirits, and we can share those fruits to bless other people around us.

2. Having strong fundamental.

God has given all of His words to us through the Holy Bible. As Christians, we have to make the Holy Bible one of our strong fundamentals to be able to survive in this world. Catholic Church has three strong fundamentals: Holy Bible, traditions, and Vatican Consili. Therefore, we have to read the Holy Bible everyday, understand it, and apply the teachings to our daily life. As in Mathew 7: 24-27 Jesus said: “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, which built his house on a rock; and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell not; for it was founded on a rock. And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, which built his house on the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

 3. Living a purpose driven life.

We as the children of God are demanded to be overflowing because we have been overflowed by God’s love on the cross. Because of that, we are also demanded to produce fruits of the Holy Spirit such as love, forgiveness, patient, etc. In order to be able to produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit, we have to be down to earth and ask for the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit so we could share the fruit to people around us.

In brief, should we avoid the world’s trendings or we should accept the trendings all the way it is? The answer is in 1 Corinthians 10:23-24. Paul said: “All things are lawful to me, but all things are not expedient: all things ar lawful to me, but all things edify not. Let no man seek his own, but every man another wealth.” It means all things in this world are permitted for us by God. However, we have to be able to determine which things are useful for us and other people, for not all things in this world is useful. Moreover, after we have gained what are useful for us, we should also think about other people’s need, so that we can be the salt and light of the world.
